Airdie based Too Many Fireworks Records released some of the most
exciting music to come out of Scotland in the years from its first
release in 2002 until it's recent hiatus. As well as 2mf's Dialogue
series of singles which featured the likes of Findo Gask, Errors and
Macrocosmica, the label also released albums by Flying Matchstick
Men (later to become One Records/SonyBMG artists Matchsticks), Laeto
and Titus Gein, who's music has featured in games such as MotoGP 2006.
Retrograde Media worked with Too Many Fireworks on a number of projects,
from Flying Matchstick Men's album Sleeping Sonqztq to publicity for
the label's succesful clubnight fire:works.
Production, Artwork and Publicity -
The Sleeping Sonqztq
Flying Matchstick Men's debut album was a bold move by both the band
and the label, as the concept was to release a record that was as
different from the band's live sound as possible.
grnr, also known as Retrograde Media's Gavin Thomson, was brought
in to collaborate and the result was a hugely enjoyable mashup of
'80s influenced Scottish indie-pop and skronky electronica which The
Big Issue described as having "more ideas than most bands churn
out in an entire lifetime."
As well as producing, recording, mixing and mastering The Sleeping
Sonqztq, Retrograde Media was also responsible for the design of the
album artwork and printed publicity, as well as a promotional website
for the album, and a website for Flying Matchstick Men (find out more
on the Flying Matchstick Men client page),
Artwork and Publicity - Advanced Techniques for Hands and Feet
When
Titus Gein needed someone to bring their vision of the band as Retro-Electro
Rock Warriors to fruition, Too Many Fireworks Records asked Retrograde
Media to design the artwork for their album Adanced Techniques for
Hands and Feet. Although their music features technically excellent
guitar riffs and tight drumming, Titus Gein also exude 80s metal
and 8-bit computer game kitch, and they wanted to reflect this in
the artwork for their album cover.
The process started with a photo session to capture the band rocking
out, the results of which where inserted into a specially created
Tron-like scene. This artwork was then layed out with other elements
such as a collage of live photos and some additional artwork supplied
by the band. The unique end result captures the feel of the album,
tracks from which have fiittingly been inlcuded in soundtracks for
numerous successful computer games. As well as the print-ready album
artwork, Retrograde Media also supplied 2mf with poster and flyer
layouts for the album's puclicity campaign.
Artwork and Publicity - fire:works Club Night
For two years Too Many Fireworks Records also ran the successful
fire:works club night in Glasgow which featured regular DJs from
Flying Matchstick Men, life performances and guest DJs such as National
Forest and The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster. Retrograde Media
designed much of the publicity material for fire:works, examples
of which you can see below.
